Our civil engineering policies

At Synergy Civil Engineering Ltd in Paisley, we have extensive policies, which our staff will adhere to at all times.  Get in touch with us now for civil engineering contracts across Central Scotland.

At all times we aim to:-

Work with care, safety and consideration for pedestrians and road users and ensure that they are not inconvenienced or endangered.

Always ensure that footways, carriageways and site equipment is kept in a clean and safe condition.

As far as possible, ensure that works being carried out which create noise or dust are kept to a minimum and are carried out at times that will cause the least effect to residents and pedestrians.

Ensure that any sub-contractors working with us comply with our policies and work in close co-operation with the main contractor where applicable.

As a socially responsible contractor, we are aware of the local labour market and its needs. Our aim is always to liaise and build a good working relationship with local job centres, trusts and colleges and schools within the area in which we are working and to set up targeted training and recruitment programmes whereby any vacancies and/ or training opportunities can be filled. We hope that by working closely with these organisations we can build a strong partnership with them to enable us to offer any support that they feel we can provide.

Having offered placements for work experience over the years we are keen to expand on this and offer more to school leavers in the area.

We offer our services to local schools, colleges, community projects, The Trust and Construction Plus by giving talks on working in the construction industry. It is hoped that by working closely with the above organisations we can build a strong partnership with them to enable us to offer any support they feel that we can provide.
The use and misuse of alcohol and drugs in the workplace can have many negative effects including but not limited to:
Less attention to Health & Safety rules resulting in increased risk to yourself and others.
Bad behaviour or poor discipline.
Lateness and absenteeism.
Loss of productivity and poor workmanship.
Negative effect on team morale and relationship with workmates and others.
Poor company image.
We have a duty to implement this policy to minimise the effects noted above, but mainly for the health and safety of all.
Synergy Civil Engineering Ltd is committed to improving our environmental performance, minimising our environmental impact and making resource efficiency a core requirement of all our operations.

We recognise the responsibility staff have in contributing to good environmental management and through training and distribution of appropriate literature, we aim to ensure that all our staff exercise their environmental responsibilities.

“Construction generates 3 tonnes of waste for every person in the country and produces 24% of all waste arising – 13 million tonnes are unused building products”

These are horrific statistics and as a considerate contractor, we aim to do our part in rectifying this issue. Our aims are to:


“Reduce – Reuse – Recycle”

We aim for the best practical environmental option – a balance between getting the job done well and considering the environmental impact. Our staff is trained to:


Check the labels on the products they are handling and dispose of the packaging responsibly.
Recognise different waste types (if unsure – ask)
Ensure that all pallets are returned to the supplier
Use different skips on-site for different waste types.
Reduce and recycle all packaging waste
Reuse materials where possible
Not over-order materials
Where possible order products that are safer for the environment

Waste Management
We take seriously our duty of care to ensure what is in the waste we are disposing of. All waste will be separated and dealt with in the appropriate type. All personnel will be trained and made aware of the emphasis we place on the environmental targets set by us as a company. All waste removed from our sites will be done so by a licensed carrier and will only be disposed of at a licensed site.

Inert Waste
All waste, including set concrete, bricks, asphalt, glass, tiles, slate, sand, gravel, subsoil (not topsoil) will be classed as inert waste and will be removed from the site by a licensed carried to an appropriate landfill site.

Non-hazardous waste
All timber, packaging, insulation, topsoil, plastic, wet cement, empty tins and tubes, metal, food, lead piping, treated timber will be dealt with as non-hazardous waste and will be removed from the site by a licensed carrier to an appropriate landfill site.

Hazardous waste
Including solvent-based paint, solvent-based cement additives, resins, coal tar products, batteries, solvent-based mastics and glues, asbestos, oil, petrol, diesel, preservative-treated timbers, waste containing polychlorinated biphenyl (e.g. resin-based flooring, sealants), contaminated soil containing (e.g. arsenic, cadmium, lead, nickel) will be removed from the site by a licensed carrier to an appropriate licensed landfill site.

Office waste
The office staff are advised not to print out emails or presentations wherever not necessary. Scrap paper can be used for notes. All paper purchased must be re-cycled paper. All printer cartridges should be recycled or returned to the manufacturer for re-filling. Check if a file can be re-used before throwing it out.

We hope that by showing our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint we will not only provide a greener and cleaner environment for all but may encourage others to do the same.
Ethics and Business Conduct
All employees contribute to Synergy’s reputation; therefore, all employees must adhere to ethical guidelines. Always follow these principles:

Compliance with laws
Synergy business must be conducted in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Be aware of the legal requirements that apply to your job, and follow those laws strictly. Synergy will not tolerate illegal activity conducted for personal gain or on the Company’s behalf.

Lack of knowledge of the law will not excuse your non-compliance with this Ethics Policy. If you have questions or if you require assistance with legal matters, contact Mark Duncan (Director) or your line manager.


Honesty and Integrity
Consider Synergy’s reputation and credibility in all your business relationships. Be honest and honourable in all dealings with other employees, the public, clients, suppliers, competitors and government authorities.


Entertainment and Gifts
Never accept a gift, entertainment or any other benefit from an individual or organization doing business with Synergy if that gift, entertainment or benefit could influence your decisions or, if it were made public, might appear to have influenced your business decision.

Any gift, entertainment, or benefit you provide to a business associate must be modest in scope and value. Never provide a gift, entertainment or benefit that contravenes any applicable law or contract term or that is large enough to influence, or appear to influence, the recipient’s business decisions. Ensure that you record all expenditures on gifts, entertainment and other benefits.


Political
Political Contributions
Synergy does not wish to discourage the participation of employees in political and related activities. However, you may not make political contributions on Synergy’s behalf, either directly or indirectly, without the prior written approval of Synergy’s Directors.

Compliance with Accounting Controls and Procedures
Always comply with the Company’s accounting procedures and controls, and all applicable laws. Properly record all financial data and transactions.
The management system encompasses all key aspects of business activities to ensure the quality principle is integrated into all relevant tasks. The object of the management system is to ensure customer needs and expectations are consistently achieved in contracts undertaken.

Synergy’s Company Quality Manual is the policy document relative to defining the scope of the management system. It states the overall policies and objectives for quality in all operational areas of the company. Also, outlining the responsibilities and authority for complying with the requirements of ISO 9001 – 2008 Quality Management System requirements.

It is the responsibility of the appointed Director to ensure that this manual is readily available to employees and the policies detailed within properly communicated, understood and implemented.

The implementation of procedures is the means of achieving quality objectives and communicating management system information to relevant personnel. We have established an integrated responsibility and the quality concept shall be encompassed in all activities involved in servicing customer needs and requirements. Where a defined scope of activities has been identified and documentation prepared to outline the operational methods to be adopted, all relevant employees shall be trained to conduct their duties and responsibilities following such documents.

All employees shall be trained to know, understand and execute their responsibilities to a level necessary to ensure the effective operation of the management system. The requirements defined in the management system shall be accomplished by auditing, examining or otherwise verifying relevant activities have been correctly performed. The relevant policies shall be communicated to all employees formally and informally through training and instruction.
